Which Home Locks Are Worth Buying?
Buy for the door, not the box. Front and back doors deserve a strong deadbolt, the screws matter as much as the lock, and a smart lock needs a key or power backup. Rekey first if your locks still work.
Grades in Plain Words
Schlage explains that BHMA rates home hardware on security, durability and finish, with C as good, B as better and A as best. It says all Schlage mechanical deadbolts are certified AAA.

The Door Matters Too
ACME Locksmith recommends 3 inch screws in the strike and hinges, a deadbolt with at least a 1 inch throw and a grade 2 lock at minimum. Do not skip the door from the garage or the back slider.
If You Want a Smart Lock
Check for a physical key or power port, guest codes and a temperature range. Schlage describes backup access with a key or a jumpstart port. With a July average high of 105 degrees, a keypad facing the afternoon sun deserves a battery reminder.
More Questions
Should I replace or rekey?
Rekey when the lock works and you only want old keys to stop working. Replace when it is worn, damaged or you want better hardware.
